Jack Robertson -- born in about 1921 to George D. and Helen Robertson in Indiana -- was raised in the Hessville section of Hammond, attending Morton School and Hammond High. While growing up, Jack and his family would often visit Canada, the birthplace of his father. In May 1939, they visited Toronto for the celebration of the visit of King George VI and the queen consort of Great Britain. Jack graduated from Hammond High in 1940, and soon joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, attending No. 6 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) in Dunnville, Ontario. Receiving his wings in March 1941, Jack was commissioned a Flying Officer, and served as an instructor for two years. He later went overseas, after completing a course in flying Hurricane fighter aircraft. As the war wound down, Captain Robertson married Donna May Hinkel of Munster and Hammond.
