The Race for the Yellow Jersey
1971
Shep narrated this 1 hour documentary about the "Tour Cycliste de L'Est," a stage race in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, in 1971. It profiles the Century Road Club team - John Allis, Stan Swaim, Doug Dale, Bobby Phillips and Flip Waldteufel. Film maker Tom Spain made documentaries for CBS, NBC, PBS etc. and this was one of them. He explains his selection of Shep: "A memory of a program he did in the 1950's where he read Samuel Abst's NY Times stories about the Tour de France and the great rider Jacques Anquetil. He made it sound like the race was happening right then and there. Added incredible drama with his reading of a simple news story. My bike film was feeling sluggish so I asked Shepherd to do the narration(My writing) He made the film exciting." Asked if he was a Shep fan, Tom explains: "From the beginning, even from when he wasbroadcasting from the midwest. We'd pick it up on the clear channel am stations(Was it Cleveland? Cincinnati?). Charles Kuralt was my college friend and knew how to find the signal in North Carolina. He was a fan."
