Shep's Army Career

sum
Radar
Many of Shep's Army stories involved his time spent in a radar unit. On one occasion (11-25-67) he mentions the unit as being a SCR268 "which cost the Government $1.7 million and which is now available for $12.50!" The SCR-268 and the SCR-270, the Army's first air search radars, were developed at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. The SCR-270 was inproved version of the SCR-268 and was the type used in Hawaii, which detected the Japanese air attack of 1941. Short Stories: Playboy Sept 1967 - "The Secret Mission of the Blue-Assed Buzzard" Playboy May 1971 - "The Unforgettable Exhibition Game of the Giants versus the Dodgers, Tropical Bush league"
