Shepherd opens with a tongue-in-cheek "experiment in total communications": listeners should turn the lights down and stare into the dark "curved screen" of the mind. He riffs on consciousness as nested onions and people as tiny transistors in the cosmos, then drops into a Long John Nebel anecdote about a cocker spaniel that was supposed to sing 54 songs on the air and didn’t, because its owner had given it a tranquilizer.
A short "Magic Moments of New York Life" bit follows: a Manhattan woman ordered two beds from Abraham & Straus and got ten delivered to her one-bedroom apartment, then won a settlement after tripping in the clutter. He pads the hour with commercials and parodies (House of Chan, the movie "Avanti", General winter tires, the WOR Christmas Fund, New York magazine) and a quick note on post-flood Wilkes-Barre, where people were living in trailers and one man said the flood had finally gotten him out of a rotten house.
The middle stretch is a Christmas gift rant on the "affluent society": once everyone has everything, gifts become absurd status objects—motorized pogo sticks, an FM-stereo toilet-paper dispenser, an electrically warmed derby, a $3,750 ivory-and-jade Monopoly set played with real cash—likened to pharaohs exchanging emerald elephants and ivory-coated virgins.
The main story is the childhood car scare. Just before Christmas vacation in Chicago, his father lets him take the prized, endlessly polished Oldsmobile 98 on a double date (Shepherd with Esther Jane Alberry, Flick with the much taller Jane Hutchinson) to the Oriental Theatre and the "sinful" Coconut Inn, on the condition he buy the gas and be home by 1 a.m. They park in the huge Grant Park lot, see the movie and the Marshall Field windows, drink a Seven-and-Seven and pink ladies, then return and walk row after row with no car. Near 1 a.m. he is sick with the thought of telling his father the car is stolen. The attendant checks the ticket: they were in section 2, row C; the car was in section 1, row C, sitting under a blue light. He gets home about 45 minutes late. His father is up with a beer, hears the traffic-jam excuse, and offers him a beer.
