WHEN JEAN SHEPHERD returned to Cincinnati as a member of the Crosley staff, his fans wondered what radio niche would be found for him. Their questions have been answered happily by assigning him to the 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. Saturday period on WLW Radio.
For confirmed Shepherd addicts, it is enough to report that his "exile" in Philadelphia has not hurt "Old Shep." On the contrary, it provided him with a stock of intriguing comparisons between the Queen City and the one of Brotherly Love for his opener last Saturday.
During his two-year absence, some listeners may have moved within range WLW who, strange as it may seem, never heard Jean Shepherd. So, a brief paragraph of indoctrination probably should be thrown in for them.
Although he plays records, "Old Shep" is no disc jockey, by any ordinary definition. For one thing, he steadfastly ignores requests. For another, he plays all sorts of music, including classics. And most of all, he talks - about anything from music to a singular brand of stream of consciousness stuff. In short, Jean Shepherd simply - and sometimes not at all simply - is Jean Shepherd. If that gives you a hint, the rest will be clear with listening.
Particularly on Saturday afternoon, WLW Radio has found the right place for Jean Shepherd in a homecoming welcome. |
