"Night Music for Night People" will be the theme of the musical entertainment midnight, Saturday, Feb. 2 at Town Hall when Jean Shepherd of the Village Voice presents her first jazz concert. The music department will be handled by J. J. Johnson, voted number one trombonist in the nation in the recent Downbeat, Metronome and Playboy jazz polls.
Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, Roy Eldridge. Charlie Mingus, Lee Konitz, George Wallington, Oscar Pettiford Hawkins and Jimmy Rushing will also take part. Mae Barnes and Barbara Lee will handle the songs.
Don Elliot, winner of Downbeat Magazine's miscellaneous instrument; Tony Scott, voted top clarinetist and Herbie Mann, outstanding flutist will be presented with awards by the magazine's editor Nat Hentoff.
The concert is the first in a series of regularly scheduled midnight affairs which will be presented by "The Voice of Jazz." |
