"Under no circumstances does Shepherd feels that when he was a kid things were better than they are now." and He does not feel that being a child is the best of all possible worlds and things were better than they are now.
Along with Flick and Schwartz, Shep "borrows" the old man's Pontiac and the go to the drive-in for a hamburger and a drunken truck driver plows right into the back end of the car while they are parked.
