Comments:  When it's the Christmas season, Shep comes to mind (wonder why?) and this year I decided to go find him on the Web. I never realized how popular he was and is! I haven't checked out this site yet, but I'm delighted to find it.
I met Shep once in N.J. after a show he did at centenary college in Hackettstown. He sat with us on a street curb, listening to my friend's tremendous problem and offering a suggestion or two of help. A few years later I met him again after a show he did at C.W. Post college on Long Island. He remembered me before i could even get a "hello" out and asked about my friend. I truly did not expect that. i mean, all the many people he'd met in-between....
But then, that was Shep.
Excelsior!

Comments:  I was born in '83 when A Christmas Story came out, but it is re-ran every holiday season. Till this day it is still a tradition that my brother and I must watch on the holidays. (I'm older by a year) "Ya gonna poke you're eye out kid." I wish I had a favorite part to talk about but the whole movie is so funny that I love it overall!! And in reference to Mark Sceurman's little fact, I'm glad Macaulay Culkin didn't play Ralph!! I've always watched the movie but didn't know who wrote it or who the voice was till I read his column in Weird NJ, in 4/2003

1970s, A Shep Fan Lived in Brooklyn

Comments:  As a young girl in Brooklyn, I loved listening to the exciting theme song and even more entertaining show that followed, courtesy of Jean Shepherd. I was a great fan for years and listened to him on my radio before I went to sleep. As a creative writing type, I was very in awe of him. As an adult I read his books and loved them, and often (still) give them as gifts. In the 80s, I heard he was appearing at a local college in Queens to speak. I went out of my way to go see him, along with two friends who were also Shep fans. I will just say that our dear Shep did not have the personality or reactions I'd expected or hoped for, as was illustrated when he was responding to questions from his audience. Ultimately I believe that even with his talent, he didn't fully understand (or like) the fact that his creativity and stories took on lives of their own beyond his own original, perhaps loftier, purposes. Regardless, I also enjoyed his series on America, and of course A Christmas Story. Here's to my old memories of Shep and all he meant to me.

However, I also enjoyed immensly the film of the family on Summer vacation. Could you please tell me what the movie is called and how one can attain it?

Jean Shepherd was the greatest, what a mind!! His voice is just the best on radio, TV, whatever!!

We love Jean Shepherd.

Comments:  "Who in Hell is Jean Shepherd"? That is the question I asked myself when I came across a story written by Shep while sitting one evening in my hootch in Viet Nam in '72. I was bushed from the day's work. I don't remember the issue of PB, but I recall diving into the story and not coming up for a breath until I finished. I WAS HOOKED! I found every PB I could and searched for articles by Shep. Where had he been? No, where in Hell had I been not to have heard of him? I think that I finally found and read most of the articles, but I don't really know. In time how suprised and delighted I was to find him on PBS one evening. So that's what he looks like! I can't say how warmed my heart was. I've seen most of his PBS and commercial TV stuff and several months ago I bought every book I could find containing his short stories. I ripped through them like Shamou the Killer Whale through a school of herring. I read them after having found that Jean left us in '99. Damn! I wish I could have heard him on the radio at an impressionable age. I could have avoided a life of prison, debauchery, idleness, and graduate school (one of those is correct!). Thanks for the site, Jim. Thank you, Jean.

Comments:  I discovered Shep by accident, which I guess many did. I was listening to the droning of Carlton Fredricks on hypoglycemia, a big topic in 1972, on WOR. I was curious about the theme song that was playing after that show and wondered if AM radio was playing classical music and continued to listen. Boy was I delighted by what I heard. A classical piece was Shep to me and at 16 - I was hooked! I bought the books and read them faithfully. I discovered Max's show in 1999, again by dialing around, and am pleased to discover Shep all over again. Thanks, Jim, for the best of Shep.

Comments:  Back sometime in the mid sixties I had the privilege of having a drink with “Shep.” It was in Art Dulugofs “Village Gate.” on Bleeker St. in the village. It is now sadly a drug store. I remember that it was a Monday evening because they had a special price on drinks on Mondays. It was down in the basement bar. A few of the jazz musicians off that evening would wander in and play for tips. It was a quiet night and I was standing at the far end corner of the bar, my favorite spot, having a drink. Two men were off to my left drinking and chatting. Eventually one of them broke out in laughter.
The laugh was familiar and unmistakable. It was “Shep.” I motioned over to the bartender. “Please give those two guys a drink on me.” I said quietly. I was making all of 250 bucks as a commercial artist in those days. The bartender went over and made them fresh drinks and pointed to me. “Shep” looked over at me. “Do I know you?” He asked. “No.” I replied. “I’m a listener.” Both men tipped their drinks at me. Tipping my drink I said. “Excelsior.” “Shep” smiled at me and they returned to their conversation and I went back to my drink. I would have loved it if they had called me over to discuss the “carnival of life” with them but no such luck. Some nice soft Jazz was now coming from the small stage and I took my drink over to a table to sit and listen. Later, when I retuned to the bar they were gone. Another evening in a place we called “The Village.” You guys from Nebraska or Iowa eat your hearts out. By the way,“Shep” was into martini’s.

Comments:  I was listening to "Recuerdos de Alhambra" performed by Segovia; this brought back a small flood of memories, as this was to me Jean Shepherd's quintessential Cheap Guitar Music. So I searched Google for "cheap guitar music" and found this site! I used to listen to his Sunday night show on WOR (9 pm to 1 am). I'd love to find his long rap on his childhood 4th of July's. I also played the noseflute for some years, not badly, either! Thanks for this incredible web site.

Comments:  I grew up in Wildwood Shores which is located at the southern end of Lake County, In, and bounded by the Kankakee River. We were year-round residents in an area of seasonal cabins and had to deal with the smart-ass city kids each summer. They in turn thought we were a bunch of ignorant country hicks (of course we were). My older brother lived for many years in a rented room above the Hessville Tap. I first became aware of Jean Shepherd when The Christmas Story aired on TV. I excitedly described the movie to my brother, and he said "Oh yeah dat's da guy usta be my drinkin buddy." (Even in the Lake County Boonies there remains a trace of the Chicago Accent). Our neighbor in Wildwood also had a pack of hound dogs--17 large red bone hounds who roamed the neighborhood, bent on destruction. I have often wondered if Shep's hillbilly hounds really existed in Hessville, or if they were the result of one of my brother's anecdotes. Does anyone know?

Next day at school we would argue the merits of the purple death, the number of people really named orville and how close the word flick was to a four letter word.
He was tops in my class at the Stuy and a group of us went to the Village Gate to see him.

Comments:  I read about your site in the Chicago Tribune this past weekend. The site is fantastic! I first became aware of Mr. Shepherd many years ago watching "The Great American Dream Machine" on Chicago PBS station WTTW. I absolutely fell in love with his story telling, his narrative voice and even the fact that we are from the same area here (Crown Point is the county seat for Hammond, and I grew up even closer that that adjacent to Hammond in Munster, Indiana.) Without question, I firmly believe he was the premiere story teller of our generation. I commend you for keeping alive awareness of his contributions. Thank you for the great job.

Comments:  Shep is the best! One of my favorite things he did was announce a huge parade not unlike Macy's, etc., except the parade was "The March of Time" and he described historical figures and events..... you had to be there but it was brilliant! Shep is a constant in my life and there's never been a time in my life where his movies, books, short-stories or albums hasn't been able to cheer me up. He's the under-rated genius of our time, he's a modern day Twain and O. Henry rolled into one. I sure miss him and wonder how much material we missed out on. I love you, Shep!

I know of Jean Shepherd because he dated my Aunt (Dorothy Anderson - Martin) and was friends with my Father (Johnny Anderson) years ago. I have several letters that he wrote to Dorothy when he was in the army. By the way, I noticed in the glossary under "people" that you have listed that you are uncertain whether Dorothy and Johnny are real people or not...they are (or were in my Father's case) definitely real people.

Comments:  Great work!

I never heard of any of the old radio shows -- it is wonderful to be able to hear them now.

What a story teller!

My late wife and I really enjoyed the America series... whether he was:

extolling the virtues of "Beer";

sitting a swamp boat talkin' 'bout Pogo and Churchy Le Femme:

recalling when he and his friends went down to the train yard to help
unload a Sears Mail-Order house;

his Dad's old Buick/Chevy/Oldsmobile and the"Rheostats" in his Mother's
hair;

"Whose face is on the $1,000 bill... you probably have one in your
wallet..take it out now."

... so many priceless hours of enjoyment.

We recorded many of these on the VCR, but unfortunately the tapes are lost.

Is there anywhere that these shows are available for purchase?

Or, are the shows scheduled to air again, anywhere?

I (and I think many others) would like to enjoy these again.

Thanks in Advance!

Dick Applebaum

P.S. Did the theme song of America have a name and/or who was the artist.

Comments:  Although I grew up watching A Christmas Story at least once a year since its release (I was born in 1981), I only thought to look into Shep's other works this year (which the computer wouldn't allow me to input). My line of work allows me to listen to headphones constantly, which is a beautiful thing. These days I listen almost exclusively to Jean Shepherd's broadcasts, courtesy of shep-archives.com. For the past two months, I've averaged about six hours per day of Shep, five days a week. I'm a true obsessive. If anyone can top that, I'll award you...and if you're a true fan, I shouldn't have to finish that statement!

Comments:  I used to listen to Jean Sheperd when I was in college.
My mother used to wait up for me when I went out on dates,
much to my chagrin. However, when I got home she'd be sitting there laughing like crazy. I'd sit there too and the two of us would have a cup of tea and listen. This
is one of the fondest memories I have of my mother who has
been gone now for 12 years. I'm going to buy some of his
tapes so I can go back down memory lane.

Comments:  I'm at the Bread Loaf Writers Conference now because of Shep. I loved his stories and he inspired me with the wonder of words. I love telling how I listened to him fade in and out on the radio when I was a kid in Newport News.

Comments:  I remember listening to Shep with my older brother (who controlled the radio in our room). I rediscovered the old shows recently and listen to mp3's of him every night-just like the old days!

Comments:  I listened to Shep every night while I was in Junior High School, and I got me parents to take me to "The Limelight" to watch him perform. My mother still remembers the night he had us turn out the lights and perform some kind of incantation.

Comments:  NEW!

We've located an original photograph of Shep's Warren G. Harding Elementary School ! It was difficult to find since his school was torn down in the 50's... No photos of it in the school office (current school), nor in the office of the Hammond School board. You'll even see the corner street post that says "Cleveland Street"...

We have three of them posted ...

Please visit:

and see other links to the Orpheum Theatre ("Leopold Doppler's Orpheum Gravy Boat Riot") and get a glipse of what life was like in "Hohman, Indiana."

We are fellow radio amateurs:

Edna actually talked to Shep once
on 2-meters, while we were driving
through Maine.

Comments:  His old man and mine were so alike in the movie that it soon became my all-time favorite movie. I have since read the books and listened to many of the radio shows. For some inexplicable reason his work makes me nostalgic for a time I never knew. Thank you for the website
